Antarctique: des milliers de bébés manchots meurent de faim en terre Adélie
Selon des scientifiques, la quasi-totalité des poussins d’une colonie qu’ils observaient en terre Adélie a succombé à la faim au début de l’année.
Tous ont succombé, sauf deux poussins. Plusieurs milliers de bébés, issus d’une colonie de 18 000 couples de manchots, sont morts de faim cette année, après la dernière saison de reproduction (entre fin 2016 et début 2017).
La découverte a été effectuée par des scientifiques français du CNRS, dans ce groupe qui vivait sur l’île de Petrels, en terre Adélie. Hormis les deux bébés manchots survivants, ils n’ont retrouvé que des corps d’animaux affamés et des oeufs non-éclos. Ces chercheurs, soutenus par le Fonds mondial pour la nature (WWF), observaient depuis 2010 cette colonie. Selon eux, l’étendue inhabituelle de la banquise a contraint les parents à aller plus loin chercher leur nourriture. Leur progéniture ont succombé à la faim.
Selon les spécialistes, c’est la seconde fois en quatre ans qu’une telle hécatombe se produit, alors qu’en 50 ans d’observation, aucune mort de ce type n’avait été constatée à cette échelle
Le manchot Adélie est l’image d’Epinal du manchot: il est entièrement noir sur le dos, blanc sur le ventre, la tête est noire avec un anneau blanc autour de l’oeil. Son nom provient du prénom Adèle de la femme de l’explorateur français Dumont d’Urville. Il fait partie des manchots les mieux connus et étudiés (177 points de présence ont été répertoriés).
C’est l’un des rares manchots (avec le manchot empereur) dont la présence se limite à l’Antarctique et les eaux environnantes (limitée par le ‘pack ice’). Du fait de sa petite taille et pour éviter une trop forte déperdition de sa chaleur, ses plumes sont plus longues que celles des autres espèces et elles recouvrent une grande partie du bec.
En dehors de la période de reproduction, ils sont en mer. Ils se reposent sur les icebergs et les glaces flottants dérivant au grès des courants marins. Ils viennent à terre pour préparer le nid, donner naissance et élever ses poussins.
Ils ont une espérance de vie estimée entre 10 et 20 ans.
